In 2016, she participated in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. In 2016, the U.S. Team was defeated in the Rio quarterfinals. She first took part in this tournament in the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2011. In the years 2015 and 2019 her efforts have assisted players from the U.S. Women's World Cup winning team achieve consecutive championships. In 2018 she became cocaptain for the U.S. national team. The two goals scored by Rapinoe were the result of the four-three United States victory against Australia in the Olympics in 2020 Tokyo.
